De Roberval, as he is often referred to, had a colourful life.
He grew up in the court of Louis XII and was boyhood friends with Francis I.
He fought in the war of Pavia (1525-29) with Francis I where Francis was captured by his arch enemy – Charles V the Holy Roman Emperor (Module 2 Lesson 4).
He was also a pirate turned Calvinist. He became a Protestant martyr after Francis died.
