Timeline

1559 – Henry died. Francis II came to the throne. Guises manipulates Francis II to invest power in them as his ‘uncles’. 

1560 – Francis II died. Mary Queen of Scots sent back to Scotland. Charles IX comes to the throne with Catherine acting as regent.

1561 – Coliquy of Poissy. Parlement passed the Edict of Tolerance. It confirmed Catholicism as the state religion. No harm to be done to anyone of another religion.

1562 – Edict of St. Germaine gave limited tolerance for Protestants. April / the Massacre of Wassy

1563 – Charles IX actually start ruling. Francis of Guise tried to take back Orleans but was killed. Edict of St. Germaine revoked. More comprehensive Edict of Amboise signed by Charles to end in 1568.

1564 to 1566 – Charles & Catherine took an extended tour of France. Many discussions with Jeanne D’Albret.

1567 to 1568 – Protestants led by Louis de Bourbon tried to abduct Charles.

1568 – Edict of Longjumeau replaced the Edict of Amboise. All religious freedom revoked. 

1568 to 1570 – War of Religion fought from within La Rochelle.

1572 – Charles ordered his sister, Marguerite of Valois to marry Henry III of Navarre. Jean D’Albret died in the Spring. Henry was married in the Summer.

1572 – The St. Bartholomew Day’s Massacre a few days after Henry’s wedding

1573 – Another siege of La Rochelle led by Henry Duc D’Anjou. Edict of La Rochelle in June gives freedom of worship and cities of refuge. Henry called to be King of Poland

1574 – Charles IX died. Henry recalled to France as Henry III of France
