M5 L2: Henry and The Duke de Sully

One of Henry’s ablest soldiers and close friend was the Duke of Sully – Maximillian Bethune.

 

He was eleven years old when he became a close friend and faithful soldier to Henry III of Navarre. 

 

He helped to prepare Henry for ruling France by encouraging him to become a Catholic.

 

Thanks to his able administrative and financial astuteness, he and Henry planned and implemented economic and social policies which brought France out of debt. France experienced a period of prosperity never before experienced.
